Good things come to those who wait! Who said
that, well they were true!
After having several temporary baritones,
Stephanie,Corinne and June are so pleased to announce that
as of September 2004 we have a newpermanent baritone.
Elaine Galloway has joined Synergy.
Synergy is a registered quartette with Harmony
Inc.
Synergy
June Cousens, the bass, wanted to sing in a quartet again
and knew that Stephanie Moore, a tenor, also wanted to sing
in a quartet. On Halloween night, 2001, which was a Newfound
Sound practise night, June approached Stephanie, a tenor,
with the idea. Stephanie was delighted and immediately said
that her mom Corinne Moore, who happens to be a lead really
wanted to try singing in a quartet with her daughter. All
that was needed was a baritone and finding a baritone proved
to be challenging.
As with any barbershopper who wants to sing in a quartet
you are always thinking about names. A cute catchy name
or one that has meaning to it. June, the bass, was reading
a book and came across the word ‘synergy’ and
thought that would make a nice quartet name.
When the 5 of us got together (I know a quartette is four
people but we were hedging our bets that one would sing
with us) for our first practise, June mentioned the word
and we looked it up in the dictionary. Once we read the
definition we knew that the name was both catchy and had
meaning.
By
definition Synergy means: the working together of 2 or more
things or people especially when the result is greater than
the sum of their individual effects or capability. This
really applied to the blending of our voices and harmony
parts. The four, sometimes five, of us combining our voices
to make the sound better than each of our individual voices.
What a wonderful concept and name.
So the quartet Synergy was born, now all we had to do was
learn a song or two and attempt to live up to the definition
of our name.
Synergy is:
Lead: Corinne Moore
Corinne
works at the Fairmont Hotel as a Senior Hostess. If you
have dined at the restaurant chances are Corinne has greeted
you and shown you to your table. She has worked in this
field for 20 years. While at work Corinne has been known,
when she’s not busy, to walk around practicing her
breathing exercises and choreography moves. Corinne is married
to Paul, one of the Anchormen, and has 2 daughters, one
of which is our tenor Stephanie. Corinne is one of the lead
section leaders and the “mouth shape guru” for
Newfound Sound.
Tenor: Stephanie Moore
Stephanie
is the baby of our chorus. She works as the Graphic Designer
and Production Manager for an Atlantic fisheries magazine
called The Navigator as well as doing freelance work for
Newfound Sound and the Royal Newfound Regiment Band. Stephanie
has played trumpet for the Regimental Band for 6 years and
traveled to Beaumont Hamel for the several years and participated
in the opening of the Interpretation Centre, the 85th anniversary
and when the site was dedicated as a Canadian Historical
Site. Stephanie is engaged to Tommy and they have a dog
named Kayla. Stephanie is the tenor section leader.
Baritone: Elaine Galloway
Music
has always been a part of Elaine’s life. She
plays piano, guitar, drum, composes, and is usually found
singing most everywhere she goes. Even though she
was raised in a barbershop harmony home, she only recently
decided to try it for herself - and instantly fell
in love with the close a cappella harmonies. Elaine and
her husband Shaun have three phenomenal children, who keep
them both hopping.
Bass: June Cousens
June
is a health care professional working with Women’s
Health.3 years ago she was lucky enough to get a Mon-Fri
day job which allows her more time for barbershop and quartetting.
After 20 years working 12 hour nights and days as a staff
nurse in the Labor and Delivery Room June felt she deserved
a “normal” work life. June has the pleasure
and personal challenge of being the Assistant Director for
Newfound Sound.
Since Synergy started we have competed in the Kiwanis Music
Festival.
Synergy competed for the first time at the Atlantic Provinces
Area (Area 1) Barbershop Competition in Dalhousie, New Brunswick
in June 2003 and was pleased to win the Kathryn Wright Memorial
trophy for novice quartette with the highest marks.
Synergy has sung on the Anchorman’s Annual Show and
provided Christmas entertainment at one of the hospitals.
Synergy loves to perform and provide musical entertainment
so maybe we can perform for you at a work/church function,
special birthday or other celebrations. If so, contact June
Cousens at .
